THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS OF LIGHTNING UPON CANCER
|
SIR,-As I am not aware that the records of the healing art furnish any
case of cancer having yielded to the influence of lightning, I venture to
draw the attention of the numerous readers of THE LANCET to the following
remarkable case, which may awaken due interest in the curative value of
electricity in diseases of a malignant type. Many years ago I heard the
late Dr. Golding Bird express an opinion to the effect that electrical
sparks drawn from a cancerous structure until an eruption is produced was
the only reliable means of cure which he could endorse. In confirmation of
the theory of the celebrated electrician, I beg to submit an extraordinary
instance of the therapeutic freaks of atmospherical electricity in the
cure of cancer. The case loses none of its interest on the plea of
antiquity. About thirty years ago, I attended Reuben S,---, a farm labourer, residing at Langtoft, on the Yorkshire Wolds, who suffered from cancer of the inferior lip and part of the chin for about a year, and who had agreed to an operation for their removal. In the meantime he under took to assist a poor farmer for a day in ploughing his land. During this Occupation he was struck down by lightning, and carried home in a state of insensibility. Both of his horses were killed, and the wooden beam of the plough was split and reduced to considerable fragments. Soon after the occurrence I visited, and found the ploughman in a state of great prostration, and emitting a strong odour of ozone, indicating electrical condensation of the adherent oxygen. As soon as reaction took place I bled him from the arm, which act constituted the whole of the treatment. What seems to be the most astonishing feature in the case is the healing process which was set up in the lip and chin soon after the accident. The cancer gradually lessened, and in a few weeks every trace of the diseased structure disappeared, and for ten years he enjoyed complete freedom from his former suffering and signs of the disease. In proof of the specific and hereditary character of the disorder, I may sate that the patient's granddaughter, Mrs. P-, of Driffield, lately became the subject of a cancerous tumour over the larynx, which growth, assisted by Dr. Rames, I removed successfully a few weeks ago, and under the persistent use of arsenical treatment the cure seems to be satisfactory. In S-'s case the electrical fluid seemed to form and pass through two small holes in the head-band of his trousers, and to make its exit by corresponding apertures. After this remarkable exemption from all cancerous development for so long a period, the disease reappeared, and, after a year of intense suffering, proved fatal ; still leaving the inference unaffected, that the imponderable element secured for the patient an extension of life, and ten years' relief from the distressing consequences of carcinoma, which circumstance establishes my faith in the therapeutic power of electricity in scirrhous indurations. From the foregoing representation, it is evident that frictional electricity may in good hands become one of the most powerful therapeutic agents in the dispersion of cancerous formations. When cellular hypertrophy takes place in localities favourable to the development of epithelial disease, frictional electricity might be employed for the purpose of destroying the morbid cells, whether in their incipient or advanced stages of progression. The authorities of the London Cancer Hospital will be unfaithful to their honourable trust should they decline to test to the fullest extent the curative effects of frictional electricity in some of the most hopeless variety of diseases to which humanity is exposed. I shall not venture upon any theory of the specific action of electricity on morbid depositions but consign the whole question to the abler readers of your incomparable journal.

In 1880, the medical journal the Lancet published a letter from a doctor that hailed getting struck by lightning as a miracle cure.
It cited the story of a farmer hit by a bolt that rendered him unconscious.
When he awoke, his cancer was in remission.
The writer predicted “frictional electricity” would be a “powerful therapeutic agent in the dispersion of cancerous formations.”

......... At the village where the cars stopped, we listened with
much amusement to the story of a fat, comfortable-looking individual, who was
cured by lightning in the following manner:–He was in the last stage of a
decline, when, one hot July morning, he was knocked down by a thunderbolt, a
ball of fire, which entered his side, ran all through his body, and came out at
his arm. At the place where the ball made its exit, a large ulcer was formed,
and when it dispersed he found himself in perfect health, in which he has
continued ever since! In such cases the "bottled lightning" demanded by Mrs.
Nickleby's admirer, might be a valuable remedy.

Anyway, here is relevant text from Chapter 14 of this book :
........ The therapeutic effect of lightning-stroke is verified by a number of cases, a few of which will be given. Tilesius mentions a peculiar case which was extensively quoted in London. Two brothers, one of whom was deaf, were struck by lightning. It was found that the inner part of the right ear near the tragus and anti-helix of one of the individuals was scratched, and on the following day his hearing returned. Olmstead quotes the history of a man in Carteret County, N.C., who was seized with a paralytic affection of the face and eyes, and was quite unable to close his lids. While in his bedroom, he was struck senseless by lightning, and did not recover until the next day, when it was found that the paralysis had disappeared, and during the fourteen years which he afterward lived his affection never returned. There is a record of a young collier in the north of England who lost his sight by an explosion of gunpowder, utterly destroying the right eye and fracturing the frontal bone. The vision of the left eye was lost without any serious damage to the organ, and this was attributed to shock. On returning from Ettingshall in a severe thunder storm, he remarked to his brother that he had seen light through his spectacles, and had immediately afterward experienced a piercing sensation which had passed through the eye to the back of the head. The pain was brief, and he was then able to see objects distinctly. From this occasion he steadily improved until he was able to walk about without a guide.
Le Conte mentions the case of a negress who was struck by lightning August 19, 1842, on a plantation in Georgia. For years before the reception of the shock her health had been very bad, and she seemed to be suffering from a progressive emaciation and feebleness akin to chlorosis. The difficulty had probably followed a protracted amenorrhea, subsequent to labor and a retained placenta In the course of a week she had recovered from the effects of lightning and soon experienced complete restoration to health; and for two years had been a remarkably healthy and vigorous laborer. Le Conte quotes five similar cases, and mentions one in which a lightning-shock to a woman of twenty-nine produced amenorrhea, whereas she had previously suffered from profuse menstruation, and also mentions another case of a woman of seventy who was struck unconscious; the catamenial discharge which had ceased twenty years before, was now permanently reestablished, and the shrunken mammae again resumed their full contour. .....................

from the book: "Electrical Healing and the Violet Ray"
by Gary J. Lockhart
Literature contains a number of cases in which lightning provided a healing impetus.
In 1776 Mrs. "Wynne went to Dublin to consult with several surgeons. She had a large tumor in the left breast. They didn't want to operate, so she returned home. She was looking out of the window of her home when lightning struck it and set fire to the roof. The stroke passed through her left shoulder and down her back. She tumbled to the floor and was found later that evening. Doctor Georgius Hicks visited her two days later and found that her breast tumor was smaller and softer. In a few weeks it was completely gone. He decided to try electric shock to treat breast cancer. He was able to reduce the cancerous tumors and pain in two women with shocks.
In the summer of 1806 Samuel Leffers suffered from a stroke. The left side of his face was numb and he had great difficulty in speaking. He was unable to close one eye and could hardly walk. Several months later while he was in his house lightning struck and he lay senseless for about twenty minutes. When he recovered he began to tee] much better. The next day he sat dawn to write a letter to a friend, and he found that he didn't need glasses. Although he lost part of his hearing, he looked thirty years younger and his face acquired a remarkable smoothness and beauty.
Susana Watts was traveling home when a severe storm struck. The carriage broke down and she had 10 walk the rest of die way. The cold weather was too much and her health failed. She was unable to use her arms and was confined to bed. Three years later a bolt of lightning struck the house and left a large circle on the ceiling with a black ring. She was unconscious and the servants loosened her clothes and began to massage her. As she awoke she was angry with them, for touching her. Then she got up and began to walk. She stumbled and reached out for the handrail. The lightning restored the use of her arm and cured her arthritis.
In 1822 Martin Rockwell was standing looking out of a window when lightning struck die building about ten feet away. He was briefly paralyzed and it took an hour for normal movement to return to his left leg and right arm. There was a burning sensation in his chest that continued for days. Rockwell suffered from asthma since he was a boy and was often unable to sleep. Since the lightning strike he was entirely free of asthma. He would tee! it slightly when he had. a cold or was fatigued.
In 1828 a ship was crossing the Atlantic with a passenger who had been paralyzed for three years. Lighting struck his quarters, and suddenly he jumped out of bed. He remained perfectly normal ever since.
Another strange stroke ol lighrning aroused medical curiosity in 1846. Lightning struck a group of black women. One woman had been childless tor years and in a few months, she was expecting. Another woman was seventy years old and she had gone through meno-pause twenty years before. She began to menstruate and continued for the next three years.
Around 1850 an English farmer developed cancer of the lower lip and chin. He agreed to have surgery, but before the dace he was out plowing his fields. He was struck by lightning, both of his horses were killed, and his plow was shattered. A few weeks later die cancer was distinctly less and in months it disappeared. He enjoyed good health for the next ten years. The cancer reappeared and the man died,
Thomas Young was a farmer near Dukedom, Tennessee. Cancer began on his face and the surgeon removed part of his lower jaw. The cancer continued to spread and by June of 1932 he was nearly dead. He chose to spend his last days lying in bed or on a hammock under the trees. One day a sudden storm came and struck one of die trees his hammock was tired to. The bolt stunned him and ripped the soles from his shoes. In a few days he began to feel better. The cancerous sores started to heal, and soon he was back to normal.
In 1971 Edwin Robinson jackknited his truck in order to avoid hitting a car. As a. result of the accident he became blind and quite deaf, [n June of 1980 he walked out into the backyard as a storm was brewing to call his pet chicken indoors. The next moment he felt as "somebody cracked a whip over his head." He lay unconscious for about twenty minutes before he was able to go inside. After a good nap he went into the kitchen for a sandwich. Suddenly he realized he could see a little. His wife asked: "What time is it?" He was able to tell her diat it was 5 P.M. Two days later he was able to walk about without his cane. His hearing returned and he didn't need the hearing aid. He kept remarking about the strange feeling on the top of his head. A new crop of hair was growing over the bald area.
Two brothers in London were struck by lightning. The next day the deaf brother recovered his hearing.
A coal miner in Northern England lost his sight after an explosion of gunpowder. After he was struck by lightning the sight of his left eye returned.
A woman with multiple sclerosis was struck by lightning. She had been slowly degenerating, but within months she recovered most of her normal function.

Suppression of Information
concerning a Lightning Cure
within a few days time :
After incorporating the following webpage
in the present webpage ( www.papimi.gr/lancet.htm )
Cured by lightning
A remarkable case of paralysis
being cured by lightning is reported from Bad Beyhausen.
A Berlin doctor ordered a patient of his who had been paralysed in both feet for
many years to take the baths, not for a cure as that appeared hopeless, but
thiriking the invalid might possibly derive some slight benefit from the waters.
The patient was ordered to be as much qs possible in the open air, and was in
the habit or sitting outside the house in a bath-chair.
Recently, a vioIent thunderstrom canne on, and everydody in the house forgot the
sick man was outside.
Suddenly a vivid flash of lightning and a terrific crash of thunder reminded them of the fact, and they were just about to go in search of him when the invalid appeared in their midst, walking without any difficulty.
From that moment, he has appeared
to be completely cured.
This case, the Hoyaer Wochenblatt says, has excited great interest among the
medical men; some of whom believe the cure to be effected merely by fear and the
intense desire to walk, others think that the electric current may have assisted
the paralysed limbs to move.
Searching again after a few days(below).... webpage was missing !
However, webpage was truly existing,
because relevant index of google still existed,
